How Good Can it Get?

Let Go Before You Jump

"When I let go of what I am,
I become what I might be."
— Lao Tzu

Letting go of staying connected to the world through email, texts, the internet and TV may seem like a recipe for boredom—yet amazing gifts can be found when we are not constantly engaged. University of Central Lancashire psychology professor Dr. Sandi Mann recently conducted a research study that suggests that boredom at work can make us more creative. She found that people engaged in passive, boring activities were much more creative than those lacking such inviting opportunities to daydream. Dr. Mann shared with BBC reporter David Robson why boredom is good for you, and why she feels we should embrace boredom when it strikes: “Instead of saying I’m bored when I’m stuck in traffic, I’ll put music on and allow my mind to wander–knowing that it’s good for me. And I let my kids be bored too–because it’s good for their creativity.”

My experiences with boredom match what Dr. Sandi Mann describes. I welcome boredom as an invitation to enjoy valuable daydreaming time in a meditative state of mind. I love the way such unstructured times provide me with creative insights about ways to disengage from destructive patterns and reengage with beneficial ones. I love getting flashes of inspiration that provide me with timely insights as to what I can best do right here, right now.

Cynthia Sue Larson with Deepak Chopra
Dr. Deepak Chopra interviewing Cynthia Sue Larson on One World with Deepak Chopra
While you might imagine the emotion of boredom to be as old as humankind, the word "boredom” is actually quite new, having entered the English language in the book, Bleak House by Charles Dickens written in the 1850s. In Bleak House, the lady of the manor, Lady Dedlock, says she feels "bored to death." Boredom is conveyed as an emotionally painful condition that no amount of money, comfort and privilege can prevent.

I suspect that one of the reasons the word "boredom" is so new in human language is that historically humans appreciated and understood the wonderful intuitive insights we get when bored and daydreaming. We are richly rewarded by glimpses of new ideas and imaginal realms we would never enjoy if we filled our attention with immediate, convenient distractions, such as we find in the technological wonders of our day.

We can benefit from taking time away from our electronic devices, as I recently did on my trip to New York City to meet with Dr. Deepak Chopra to be interviewed for One World with Deepak Chopra. Taking a break from the onslaught of email, news feeds, and phone calls helped me feel refreshed and relaxed while interacting with the people I encountered along the way. I realize that I am now in the minority when taking electronic media breaks, but I suspect all of us can benefit from the opportunity to let go of technology for a few days, learning a bit more about who we are in the process.

Cynthia Sue Larson with Sugar Ray Leonard
Cynthia Sue Larson with Sugar Ray Leonard and Quantum Jumps
Time away from technological devices feels natural to me, since it reminds me of long summer days of my childhood when my parents encouraged me to spend time playing outdoors with whatever activities my imagination could devise, rather than tune in to watch TV. Spending long hours outdoors in my childhood provided me with firsthand experience of the nurturing embrace of our mulberry trees, when I climbed up into their branches. Time spent watching ant colonies engaged my imagination, as I wondered where they were going, and how their subterranean homes were designed.

Daniel Levitan recently wrote an article asserting that the modern world is bad for our brains, stating “When trying to concentrate on a task, an unread email in your inbox can reduce your effective IQ by 10 points.” His point is that many of us are multitasking at unprecedented levels, with the benefit of enormously efficient smartphones, ipads, and apps that assist us in keeping up with our family, friends, work, hobbies, interests, and entertainment. The kicker is that as MIT neuroscientist Earl Miller asserts, our brains are “not wired to multitask well. When people think they’re multitasking, they’re actually just switching from one task to another very rapidly. And every time they do, there’s a cognitive cost in doing so.”

When I take mediative walks away from electronic gadgets, I actually feel immersed in nature. The chatter of my mind quiets down, and eventually I gain access to an effortless state of ease of being, in which I am the walker—I am the trail—I am the Earth. There is a kind of harmony in letting go of identity, of striving. And in this harmonious state of beingness, creative ideas can be seen, heard, felt and known.

Cynthia Sue Larson and Dr. Stanley Krippner
Cynthia Sue Larson and Dr. Stanley Krippner

Discussing Dreams, Physics, and Consciousness with Dr. Stanley Krippner
I recently had the pleasure to chat with Dr. Stanley Krippner about quantum logic, consciousness, and dreams. Dr. Krippner is a professor of psychology at Saybrook University, and author, editor, and co-author of numerous books including:  "The Voice of Rolling Thunder," "Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder," and many others. I first met Stanley Krippner about ten years ago at the International Conference on the Study of Shamanism and Alternative Modes of Healing, where we've both given presentations. I've long been deeply impressed with the insights Stanley shares, such as I reported in the September 2005 issue of RealityShifters, in which I mentioned some fascinating aspects of his work.

Cynthia Sue Larson and Dr. Deepak Chopra

Talking with Deepak Chopra and Sugar Ray Leonard about Quantum Physics
I loved talking with Dr. Deepak Chopra in New York City this month! I've only been to New York City once before, and that was back in 1990 in the summertime, so this was an entirely different experience. New York looked beautiful to me, with piles of snow along sidewalk edges, and occasional flurries of snow coming and going during the time I was there. The main reason I'd come to New York this February was to meet Dr. Chopra, who'd been the keynote speaker at an Institute of Noetic Sciences Event I attended in San Francisco several years ago. When I arrived at the Deepak Homebase situated on the mezzanine above the ground floor of ABC Carpet and Home, I was impressed at the beautiful way the space was arranged. The Deepak Homebase is clearly a place of peace, balance and calm, and is large and spacious enough to be utilized for events. Original paintings by Thich Nhat Hanh grace the walls, with visual reminders to be centered, mindful, balanced, and whole. I could see through large floor-to-ceiling windows that Deepak was on camera, engaged in talking with a guest. I was greeted by members of Deepak's staff, who welcomed me to enter the spacious room as soon as the current interview finished, where I was greeted Dr. Chopra as he walked from the interview area toward his office.

(4) Your Reality Shift Stories

Road Suddenly Under Construction
Allison
Edinburgh, Scotland, UK

I HAD to share this with you, this is unbelievable! It has just literally happened within the last hour. I went to pick up a friend to go for a bite to eat. They live just outside of Edinburgh, so I took one of the main roads to get there. The road was fairly clear & not too busy. I left the flat around 6.15, it would have been around 6.30 by the time I drove down this road. I got to my friends at approximately 6.45. I picked up my friend and headed back into town, taking the same route. We left his place just after 7, stopped at a shop to get a couple of things then headed back into Edinburgh. We hit the same road 20 mins ago—less than an hour from my journey out—and guess what? The road had road works & construction workers on it. And the work that has been done on the road looks like the road works have been there for weeks! I SWEAR TO GOD! Part of the road had been closed off & temporary traffic lights have been put in place, as the traffic has to share part of the same road now. The whole road was lined with traffic cones and large metal railings lined one side of the road. The part of the road that is closed off is all dug up. and there was a worker van, with two or three guys still working on the road. It would have been around 7.30 pm by the time we reached this road and bizarrely, these road works appeared that weren't there at 6.30 when I first drove down this road—an hour earlier! I even said to my friend (in a joking way, in case he thought I was nuts) that I didn't remember these road works on the way out to get him. I expected him to say, “don't be daft, Allison!” or something along those lines. But he didn't. He said “Neither do I.” It turned out he had been down this very same road earlier today. We both just looked at each other completely mystified & dumbfounded by these roadworks that have literally appeared out of nowhere! I swear Cynthia that they weren't there when I first drove down this road not even an hour ago. And there's no way that the lights/machinery/dug up road and the amount of construction work that was done, could possibly have been done within the space of an hour! No way at all! I am in total shock, that was almost a reality shift in real time! I still can't believe it! I wish you could have experienced it too—I am now completely, 100% convinced that reality shifts are REAL! After driving off this particular road, I got a really strong feeling that some part of reality has shifted around me. And that the path of my life has just taken a massive change or maneuver. I don't know where to, but I get the feeling it will reveal itself in time. I'm really glad that my friend witnessed this too, it reassured me that I'm definitely not going nuts! He was really mystified by it as well. It's just not feasibly possible that all of this could have been done in the space of an hour. Not only that, rush hour traffic on a Friday starts around 4pm & starts to tail off at around 6pm so it wouldn't have been set up during that time either. A set up like that is normally done during the night when the roads are quiet, especially on a main road. Plus my friend was on the very same road earlier today and he swore the road works weren't there at that time either. He was just as mystified as me! Unfortunately, the voice of 'reasoning' started to take over in his head & he started saying 'they must have been there, it must have been his imagination' etc. The same way I used to react to these weird shifts in reality. Before I came across yourself & started learning about this phenomena.

Note from Cynthia: Thank you so much for sharing your experience of seeing construction workers and roadwork on a road in real time! How marvelous that you and your friend both saw the road without road construction and with road workers and signs of ongoing roadwork on the same day, as it's easier to recognize when you've definitely encountered a reality shift of such magnitude with validation from another trusted observer!

I Saw Darkness Out the Airplane Window Where Frankfurt Should Have Been
Jack
Wellington, New Zealand

I was flying to Frankfurt in 2010 and got a window seat on the right, which isn't usually what I request, but my new travel agent didn't know my aisle preference. We were approaching Frankfurt in the late evening by this stage, judging by the map and the time, and I could see the odd light in the distance. But it was a pretty dull view, so I glanced back inside the cabin for no more than a second and a half. I then looked out again and there were two cities, each with bright, night lights shining, where the darkness was just before. Only a second before I had a good look outside and knew there were no cities coming up. I also looked as far back as I could through the tiny window, to see if there was darkness there, but there were lights as well, just not as concentrated. I've gone through explanations in my head: maybe my eyes hadn't adjusted to the darkness outside, or maybe the plane changed direction or angle suddenly to bring the cities into view. The former doesn't sound likely, otherwise how could I have seen the cities on my second view? As to the latter, I didn't turn completely away and if the plane had straightened up (it would need to have been a very sudden maneuver with the brief time), I would have seen the cities come into view in my peripheral vision. (This wouldn't explain the light I saw in the distance on my first view, and I'm sure I didn't just see part of the plane's wing—this was definitely something beneath us.) It really seemed like those cities had a massive blackout one second (including every single vehicle) and the lights came on the next! Less conventional explanations might be reality "switched on" because we were getting near our destination (this is what it felt like at the time), or this was some sort of time shift. The passengers sitting next to me didn't speak English, so I wasn't able to ask if they experienced anything strange.

Note from Cynthia: Wow, thank you so very much for providing so much detail from your experience of looking out the airplane window to first see darkness, and moments later to see very clear light clusters around two cities! I was just recently looking out an airplane window last week while flying from San Francisco to New York, so I know that even when a plane is flying very fast--such as at around 550 mph while flying over a city like Detroit (I took a photo of both the city lights and the JetBlue screen showing our location, altitude and speed), a person has time for several minutes to see close to the same city lights down below. Your experience is thus quite remarkable, in that aside from the explanation of a reality shift--a move from one possible universe to another--there really aren't many other good contenders.

Roaming Yellow Hawk Soccer Ball
Jack
Wellington, New Zealand

I used to live in a house where I always felt there was a presence in the corridor. My toys would occasionally be found outside but I was very much an indoors kid, but we never really thought too much about any of it: we just accepted that things got moved. There was one particular yellow soccer ball, with the Hawk brand, that I used to play with. I can't recall how I got it, but I don't believe it was bought for me. It's likely that it was found on our property and, as there were no kids in my immediate neighbourhood, we kept it. We weren't a well-off family at this stage so everything was a bit of a treasure. I even put my name on it at one point. For a while, this soccer ball went missing. I was sure it was at a certain location in the corridor, by a shoe stand, but it was never to be found. As I mentioned, I was an indoors kid so this ball was usually kicked around this very long corridor at home. A while later, my grandmother, on her way to work, said she spotted it in a window of a neighbouring house. Sure enough, there it was. We had no idea how it got there, but it didn't seem that important at the time. A few more years passed and it was found on top of the trash cans at the back of the house! It was the same ball—my name was still on it! This would have been around 1982. In 1983, we moved, and the ball came with us. It was last spotted in our basement. After that, it wasn't seen again. I'm hoping some child is enjoying it now and that it travels around to different homes!

Note from Cynthia: Thanks so much for sharing your experiences with the roaming soccer ball. Wow, how amazing to see what sounds like a rather distinctive soccer ball missing one day--but visible in a neighbor's window for a while, and then years later showing up atop the trash cans at the back of your house! I especially appreciate the detail that your signature was on this bright yellow soccer ball, making it unmistakably one-of-a-kind!

Sir David Attenborough Alive Again
Bernard
Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Listening to the car radio one day about five or six years ago, I heard the death announcement of David Attenborough. I mentioned it to my colleagues, and they just looked at me blankly. As far as I am aware, I was the only one that heard the announcement of his death on the radio, and there were no other obituaries—this was just before Steve Irwin’s death.

Note from Cynthia: Thanks so much for sharing your experience with having heard a radio report of Sir David Attenborough’s death. Steve Irwin passed away in 2006, according to current versions of historical reports, so that clears up the possibility you might have heard the flurry of confused and mistaken reports of Sir David Attenborough passing away in 2014, when his brother Richard died in August of that year. I’m curious to find out if anyone else recalls having heard of Sir David Attenborough having died back around 2006.

(5) Questions and Answers

Quantum Jumps
Cynthia,
I've listened to and watched many of your video clips, and I think you are completely correct and on "the right track" about the actual nature of reality. I have been convinced for many years about the existence of infinite numbers of parallel worlds because of a spiritual experience I had in 1975, which showed me how Consciousness activates time and space to allow it to experience the illusion of moving through an infinite number of experiences and variations and combinations of probable outcomes. I have led a normal life, but have, since that time, been haunted (in a good way) by the memories of that experience, and have only in recent years begun to read things that confirmed that there are many others who believe the same things, including those with a scientific background, such as yourself. I have lately become convinced that, since points in time and space all exist simultaneously, it is possible to return your consciousness to a previous point where a life-changing decision was made, and then, retaining full memory of the current timeline, enter again into that earlier dimension, make a different decision, then live forward from that point, and experience a different timeline. When people speak or write about time travel, they usually make the assumption that there's only one reality, and that if someone changed something, then they would change the future. Yes, you would change the future, but not in the current timeline, which would also continue to exist, I believe. At any rate, do you know if it is possible to return consciousness to a previous time/space coordinate, and do you know of anyone that you believe to not be crazy, who claims to be from a future parallel dimension? If you've ever spoken about this, or written about this, please direct me to the video or book. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I would greatly appreciate your response.
— Patric

Dear Patric,
Thanks so much for writing to me with your question about whether it may be possible to return consciousness to a previous time/space coordinate, or anyone that I believe to not be crazy, who claims to be from a future parallel dimension? I do believe it's possible to experience 'jumps' and 'shifts' when our subconscious aligns with other possible realities, leaving us with evidence that we're in a different reality, in which, for example, American Thanksgiving has now 'always been' on the 4th Thursday of November. Pretty much any time we experience such shifts, we find ourselves in a world in which one or two or perhaps several things are different, yet "it's always been that way." With regard to time travelers, I've not yet met someone who has time traveled in their current incarnation.
love and thanks,
— Cynthia

Making Peace with Suicide

Making Peace with Suicide:
A Book of Hope, Understanding, and Comfort

by Adele Ryan McDowell
A Survivor's Guide to Suicide, Written with Great Love and Compassion
http://amzn.to/1DB7mxb

"Making Peace with Suicide" is the best book I've ever read at helping readers understand the complex factors involved when people choose to take their own lives. With vast numbers of contributing factors to suicide, and more being announced in the news each year--such as a connection between high altitudes and altitude-induced oxygen depletion--it's clear we need better ways to talk about and understand why people choose to kill themselves. "Making Peace with Suicide" provides the path toward compassionate understanding, as well as tips about what works best to help the suicidally inclined choose life over death. I particularly love the inclusion in this book of the topic of "soul loss," since many suicides have sources other than mental illness, substance abuse, and persistent pain. I greatly appreciate the ways that McDowell considers mind-body-spirit interaction, sharing insights, research and personal anecdotes from her decades of experience as a psychotherapist and long hours working as a suicide-hotline responder. Some of my favorite parts of "Making Peace with Suicide" are inclusions of personal insights from those who attempted suicide--sometimes more than once--from people poised at the brink of suicide who are still with us. These first-hand accounts show how moving away from the brink of suicide requires conscious choice and deliberate action. McDowell shares seven steps you can take to tell your story and come to peace with the dark moments--including what you did well in those dark moments--before calling your spirit back. "Making Peace with Suicide" is a book with so much heart and soul that readers can find a sense of peace and forgiveness about experiences they've had no previous peace or comfort in before. Highly recommended!

Man of Miracles

Man of Miracles:
The Transcendant Ingo Swann

by Raul daSilva
Captivating Short Biography on one of the World's Remote Viewing Experts
http://amzn.to/1ASzHhh

What a treat to read a book about one of the most gifted remote viewers the world has ever known, from the vantage point of a dear friend of his, Raul daSilva. Seldom do biographies capture the true sense and spirit of the depth and breadth of a person as well as this compassionate short memoir manages to do, and I especially love the "little things," such as descriptions of the walks and talks Ingo and Raul frequently enjoyed over the years in New York. This book is a fast read, so it's not overwhelming or exhausting, but instead can be read and reread many times. It's the kind of book that sinks in over time, in which the reader notices upon subsequent readings juicy tidbits and deeper significance of relevant details. Highly recommended for all spiritual and metaphysical seekers, and everyone interested in the subject of remote viewing.
