How Good Can it Get?

Do You See What I See?

"You see what you know!”
― Frank Stella

We don’t often realize it, but what we see and what we take to obviously be “the way things are” has a great deal more to do with what we know than anything that could be considered to be objectively true.

When you look at the photo of me in this issue of RealityShifters, your knowledge provides you with perspective on where this picture was taken. You might recognize something in the background of the photo that indicates the setting, and provides you with information that might very well be different than what someone else viewing this picture sees. This might have been a completely subconscious process on your part when you first saw the picture—though now that you’re reading about this, you might be looking at the picture a little more closely. And if your conscious attention is directed to consider the shape of the windows and ceiling of the space in the picture, you might at that point get an “Aha!” moment of realizing exactly where this photo was taken—inside a car. Someone who has never seen the inside of a car would not have the same frame of reference when viewing this picture—and depending on their areas of expertise, might immediately see things that are not so obvious to you.

Scientists involved in perceptual research have found recent evidence suggesting that what we know affects our visual perception of the world. Researcher Robert W. Wiley explains, "If you’re an expert, things that look complex to a novice look simple to you." While these researchers were investigating the effects of alphabet and expertise on letter perception, Wiley emphasizes that these findings should hold true for any kind of object adding, "Expertise matters. It changes how you perceive things. Part of being an expert is learning what matters and what doesn’t matter."

Reality Shifts
I describe this idea that what we see depends on what we know in my book, Reality Shifts: When Consciousness Changes the Physical World, with an example of a time when I was a child that I saw an extraordinary thing one day at the beach:
My family and I were vacationing at a remote island in the Pacific Ocean, and we spent a leisurely day on a quiet, uninhabited beach. I sat by myself on a part of the beach populated by a whole colony of sand crabs. These little crabs lived in holes in the sand that each crab dug for itself, and at any sign of movement, the crabs would scurry quickly down into their holes for safety. I observed one of the crabs moving sand with a claw with absent-minded proficiency, and I was mesmerized to see the effortless way it obtained a scoop of sand and lifted it into the air. This activity looked like so much fun to me that I made a similar ball of sand and playfully tossed it toward some crabs. The sand ball hit an unsuspecting crab, which immediately scooped up a ball of sand and held it aloft while standing up as high on its back legs as possible. The crab looked as tense and concerned as a crab can look, with moist grains of sand from the sand ball I'd just tossed still clinging to its shell.

    Reality Shifts
The crab continued standing high on its back legs, surveying the area and assessing all the crabs in the vicinity to determine who might have tossed a sand ball. After several long moments of careful consideration, the crab steadied itself as it fixed its gaze on one particular crab. It suddenly flung its ball of sand at this unsuspecting crab, which it hit with incredible precision! The targeted crab immediately scooped up a ball of sand and returned fire. In a matter of minutes, a dozen little crabs were all flinging sand balls at one another with reckless abandon. None of the crabs suspected the perpetrator of the whole sand ball fracas was not a crab at all, but a human.

My experience with these sand crabs shows me that crabs interpret what happens to them in terms they can understand, which may not be the truest sense of what is actually happening. We humans are not so different from crabs, in the sense that we are also only capable of interpreting experience based on what we know of reality. Some forces are simply outside our realm of comprehension. The sand crabs had no prior knowledge of humans, so they did not imagine I might have been the one who threw the first sand ball, though my interaction with them had the effect of moving almost every single crab on the beach into action.

As we pay attention to evidence of the ways we sometimes observe things appear, disappear, transform and transport—as well as changes in our experience of time—we will be more likely to recognize when we experience reality shifts and quantum jumps.

Experience the Wonders of Quantum Logic in the New Quantum Age
At this dawn of the new Quantum Age, with the advent of new quantum computers, a paradigm shift in what we consider "logical" is underway. In the 1860s, Boolean logic provided the structural framework by which classical computers envisioned by Charles Babbage could be operated in accordance with ideas of materialistic determinism. The notions of reducing all statements to being either true or false, working through problems and possibilities with truth tables, and ignoring the "excluded middle," are central to Boolean logic and classical computers of the last hundred years--yet inadequate for operating quantum computers in the future. New findings from the fields of cognitive science and quantum information theory suggest that our previous idea of what is "logical" has been overly simplified. There is merely a special case of the fundamental quantum logic that is now being found to be the dominant fundamental logic of the natural world. Unlike classical Boolean logic gates, quantum logic gates allow for forward and backward movement through time, with allowances for interconnectedness through entanglement, and with the requirement that every finite system contains infinite amounts of information. Examples of ways that human cognition appears to operate in accordance with quantum logic will be provided, along with numerous other examples of primacy of quantum logic in the natural world.

Quantum Models of Cognition and
Decision
Quantum Cognition with Jerome R. Busemeyer
on Living the Quantum Dream with Cynthia Sue Larson

Do humans think more like quantum computers than classical computers? Cynthia Sue Larson talks with Jerome R. Busemeyer about the new field of quantum cognition and his book, Quantum Models of Cognition and Decision. Busemeyer describes how he became interested in investigating the ways quantum logic and theory provides a fundamentally different–and in many cases more accurate–foundational model by which to better understand how humans think and make decisions. The order and context of events turns out to make a significant difference in the decisions we make, which helps explain why people sometimes answer very differently when we change the order of the questions that we ask. Dr. Jerome R. Busemeyer is a Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA. His research includes mathematical models of learning and decision making, and he has formulated a dynamic theory of human decision making called decision field theory. Jerome Busemeyer is the recipient of the 2015 Howard Crosby Warren Medal of the Society of Experimental Psychologists in recognition of longstanding contributions in dynamic decision making and pioneering work in models of quantum cognition. Dr. Busemeyer is one of two co-authors of the book, “Quantum Models of Cognition and Decision.” http://psych.indiana.edu/faculty/jbusemey.php

Noticing Alternate Histories and Superposition of States
We often think in terms of quantum physics being something very complicated that we can't understand that we don't need to understand, since it has to do with the realm of the very small--however, recent research indicates that's not true. A survey of physicists showed that more than two thirds of the physicists interviewed believe that you and I and everybody watching all exist in a superposition of states. So what, exactly, is a superposition of states? You may have heard of Schrödinger's cat being alive and dead--at the same time. This was a thought experiment intended to demonstrate the ridiculous quality of quantum physics and the impossibility of these ideas applying to our everyday lives. The thought experiment consists of a box with a cat, a vial of poison, a radioactive isotope decaying at some unpredictable rate. That little bit of randomness means that we can't predict when--or if--the device that can break open the vial of poison might activate a series of automated events resulting in the death of the cat. In this example, when we say that a quantum particle--such as the radioactive isotope--exists in a superposition of states, we are saying that it is considered to be both decaying and not decaying. And this translates to us considering that it is both activating the poison and not activating the poison--which results in us having a cat that is both alive and dead. When we think of quantum particles existing in a superposition of states, we are considering them to be in a state of spin up and spin down--so they can be everything that's possible for them to be. This is somewhat analogous to flipping a coin in the air and rather than having it fall down into a state of clearly being "heads" or "tails," it just stays spinning. And while it's spinning, it's in that superposition of states. And then when someone you finally look to see what state it is in--by taking a measurement--you catch the coin, and you have a measurement. So the idea of all of us existing in a superposition of states, leads us to expect that we ought to be able to sometimes see signs of this. What kind of signs might you notice? You might notice that when we talk past events, such as things that happened in childhood, your siblings would disagree with you about what happened. Perhaps such disagreements have already occurred--in which case you may have simply thought other people were mistaken, a bit mentally foggy, crazy, or that they're lying. But instead if you think instead in terms of the possibility that they actually are experiencing a different reality, this is one way you might detect the presence of superposition of states in your life. Another possible way that you could see a superposition of states is by experiencing amazing, miraculous kinds of spontaneous remission of illness or disease. Even if you or those you know haven't had miraculous recoveries, perhaps you may have sometimes noticed times when you've started to catch a cold, and suddenly been completely well. A third way you might observe the presence of alternate histories and a superposition of states would be if you've noticed changes in familiar songs, movies, or books. This might have come to your attention since you've read them before and you've watched them before, but now the words or plot is different. And you might think, "Well, I just didn't remember it correctly." But another possibility to consider is that you did remember it correctly. And now it's "always been" some other way according to official historical records. You can read the full blog post on this topic posted at: http://wp.me/pbqQk-Ob

Conversations with Edgar Dean Mitchell
One of my first and most influential mentors as an author and consciousness researcher has been Edgar Dean Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, founder of the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), and author of Psychic Exploration and The Way of the Explorer. I felt blessed to be able to see Dr. Mitchell in person at an IONS event in California in February 2010, where he was the guest of honor. I loved chatting with Edgar that chilly evening at the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland about the remarkable speed of technological advances over the past hundred years. He told me how amazing it is that his grandfather had crossed the United States of America in a covered wagon, his father was born soon after the Wright brothers made their historic first flight, and then Edgar walked on the moon and made it safely back home to Earth on Apollo 14. This was even more amazing, because Edgar’s Apollo 14 mission immediately followed the nerve-wrackingly problematic Apollo 13. I first got to know Dr. Mitchell via email correspondence that began sixteen years ago, in March 2000. When we first began our correspondence, we commiserated about the challenges of the publishing world, and shared our ideas regarding the connection between consciousness and the physical world. Dr. Mitchell provided me with his honest assessment of my manuscripts, and helped me envision a positive future for humanity on our beautiful blue-green planet, Earth."We went to the moon as technicians; we returned as humanitarians.” I was moved by the way that Dr. Mitchell had a positive vision for humanity that he shared through his commitment to creating an organization dedicated to exploring consciousness, at the Institute of Noetic Sciences. He frequently referred to the epiphany he’d had while in space, returning in his Apollo capsule to the Earth from the moon, as he looked up in the sky to see a full Earth. He describes in The Way of the Explorer that at that moment he felt, “I am one of a growing handful of human beings to have seen the Earth from the point of view of an extraterrestrial. In the heavens there is no up and down, no east or west. Earth is but a beautiful blue speck in the midst of a vast emptiness marked by luminous celestial bodies. We inhabit but one of those celestial bodies; one of the most organized-for all we know. From the heavens, in 1971, the Earth looked peaceful and harmonious, but of course all was not as it appeared. Conflict that threatened our very survival lay below. Weapons were poised, ready to annihilate life as we knew it at a moment’s notice; environmental crises were lurking just beyond public awareness. The common root of these mushrooming dilemmas, I believe, has been conflicting, out-dated, flawed ideology and dogma, with roots in antiquity." (4) Your Reality Shift Stories

If You Build It They Will Come & Sex in the City
Chris
Redmond, Washington, USA

Thank you for your information and insights! I heard you recently on a radio talk show, and was blown away by the questions and how my answers were different from what is true in this reality! Funny enough, the other day I was watching an old episode of "Sex AND the City" (which I remember as Sex IN the City), and one of the characters made reference to the Field of Dreams quote, "If you build it HE will come,” which I remember as "If you build it THEY will come." Very interesting stuff!

Note from Cynthia: Whoa--hold everything--you're the first one to notify me regarding the change in the movie dialogue from the Kevin Costner movie, "Field of Dreams," which I clearly remember used to be, "If you build it, they will come"! Good heavens! Sometimes I will see changes in movie dialogue that is not nearly so significant as to be the most famous line of dialogue in the whole movie, which then catches on and is remembered and repeated by people for years afterward. I'm so glad you mentioned this one to me--and of course so many people have noticed that "Sex and the City" used to be "Sex IN the City."

I Heard My Friend Before She Arrived
Frances
England, UK

One thing that happened to me was in my early twenties when I was living in France. I was spending the weekend with a friend I'd made over there, and she had a heated argument with her father, and walked off. I went down to their garage/basement area, and I heard someone walking towards the garage on the shingle stones. I looked to the garage entrance and waited for her to walk in, but she didn't appear. I went to look, and she wasn't there—no-one was there. Not very long afterwards she returned, walking on the shingle stones and in through the door of the garage. I was amazed, because I had realised that I knew she was coming.

Note from Cynthia: Your experience hearing the sound of your friend in France walking toward the garage some time before she actually did appear is remarkable! Something like this has also happened to me one day when I heard my daughter and her friends come home and walk up to the front door quite some time before they actually arrived that afternoon. This type of phenomenon in which loved ones are seen or heard before they arrive is something so common in Norway that they have a word for it, Vardogr, which I describe along with further examples in the October 2010 RealityShifters http://www.realityshifters.com/pages/archives/oct10.html

Shifting through Time
Russell
Sunnyvale, California, USA

Perhaps time is merely the perceptual shifting of consciousness from one parallel reality to another. The mind shifts, not the body. Sometimes I notice memories of the past that are not in accordance with the present facts. For example memories of people that I knew have changed and they no longer have the same memories as I do. Some movies have also changed slightly. I am shifting into alternate realities—strange but true—seems like all possible histories could be on a bell cure of sorts. For 17 years my route to work was 12.3 miles. Now it is 12.0 miles— The exact same route—different reality? I would speculate that the shifts like a movie projection or a flashing hologram and are happening at a flash rate of c, the speed of light in vacuum. This is the non-local mind, which is both re-expanding the wave-function and re-collapsing the wave function into the finite localized version of self, or the body. The Universal Wave Function is the Mind of God - the Source of all Being. The localized wave function is your "soul" or spirit, similar to the concept of mind and heart - your non-local mind that identifies with the body and the "brain". the brain could be like a musical instrument that tunes into your consciousness or is created by consciousness.

Note from Cynthia: Yes, I'd agree that the mind makes the jumps and shifts, not the body. I'm glad to know you have noticed a range of different kinds of such jumps. The difference in driving time intriguing. Once you've ruled out any other possible explanation (such as different sized tires on your car), that is a really interesting reality shift!

Neighbor Living with a Black Woman
Glen
Gary, Ontario, Canada

I have another strange reality shift story. At my residence, there's neighbors across the street where a young family lives. I know the father of the family, who is a younger brother of one of my high school friends, his older sister. How this goes, a few years back, probably from 2000-2010, I noticed he was living with a Black woman. I did see his current Wife (Today) a caucasian woman. He is now married to her and living there today. They have three children. A year ago, I asked his older sister during a coffee visit, and learned they recently married two years ago—a late marriage I guess. I mentioned, "What happened to the Black woman her brother was living with a couple of years ago?" She looked at me puzzled, "What black woman?” She answered that her brother was NEVER with a black woman, not at all. And yet, I distinctively remember her driving and coming and going from their house for two years. She did in fact live there with him. I didn't see his current wife visit or anything, I assumed the children were with her. I told the sister the details I knew, and she still reacted like I was seeing things—making things up. I added that if this was some kind of a family secret, I wouldn't say a thing. She insisted there was No such woman with her brother. I didn't argue the point, as I began to realize I was remembering something else, a different reality. Do I still see the black woman in town? Yes I do. Sometimes I want to somehow get to know her, ask her about Living with that person in question. I know how silly and strange it would sound, even to me, if someone approached me asking about some event or detail I don't know about. Or, ask like, "Did you ever Live across from me at such & such time, years 2000-2009? I don't remember the exact years.” And another thing; I asked around, casually, "Did anyone remember the black woman living with that Neighbor?" My own family doesn't recall. So, I'm the only one who remembers this black woman, who lived with that man.

Note from Cynthia: Wow--I can really relate to how strange it must feel to remember something that nobody else (yet) recalls--especially something as noticeable as a neighbor's significant other no longer being part of an interracial couple. And how interesting that you sometimes see the woman you remember your neighbor having lived with around town from time to time. I can't think of an off-hand, casual way to broach the subject of whether she might have any connection to your neighbor other than directly asking her if she might happen to know him, or if she might have happened to ever live on that street.

(5) Questions and Answers

Hi, Cynthia, Greetings!
I have been watching your videos and read your blogs regarding changing our past through reality shifting. I am a bit confused regarding the concept, suppose in past I had to choose between a red coloured and a blue coloured dress. I chose blue colour but after buying and wearing it I realised that I should have taken red coloured dress or If I had a choice to choose between x and y for a particular service and if I chose any one of them and later realised that I should have chosen the other one. In such a scenario can I go back in past and change the choices I made through quantum jumping. If yes then how can I do it. I really want to alter some of my humiliating past incidences which don't let me sleep at night. Please help me regarding this. I would be highly obliged by your help.
Thanks and regards,
— Samreen

Dear Samreen,
Yes, it is possible that having made one choice, you might later find that history has changed, and you've now made a different choice in the past. While this works fairly well at times (though often a bit unpredictably), it can prove problematic when emotionally entangled with past events. Feelings of shame or blame or guilt usually tend to lock people into believing that only that reality is the one that occurred--so those who've experienced miraculous shifts in the past often do so thanks to being able to become emotionally detached through prayer and/or meditation. Even so, results are not always guaranteed--but the emotional detachment required for best results in experiencing altered reality happen to also be best for emotional well-being, so I'd recommend this course of action.
With best wishes,
— Cynthia

___________

Dear Cynthia,
(1) How long does someone have to be thinking about something before a synchronicity happens? (2) Can religious beliefs or obsessions cause synchronicity to happen? (3) Can delusions and/or mental disorders lead to synchronicity?
— Andrew

Dear Andrew,
I don't know of any definitive time pattern regarding the connection between thoughts and observations of synchronicity. If there is a connection, it most likely occurs entirely amidst an observer's thoughts, since sometimes events from other times come into positions of prominence and increased relevance, after observation of other thoughts and past or present events. Most likely almost any kind of beliefs or obsessions can be instrumental in how a person observes synchronicity to occur. This would also include delusions and/or mental disorders.
Sincerely,
— Cynthia

Quantum Models of Cognition and
Decision

Quantum Models of Cognition and Decision
by Jerome R. Busemeyer and Peter D. Bruza

Builds Strong Case for the Value of Quantum Theory in Understanding Cognition
http://amzn.to/1K7EGxh

While scientists have assumed that classical probability theory and logic was the best way to comprehend human cognition, research studies have found numerous aspects of cognition and decision to behave differently. The new field of Quantum Cognition presents us with new ways of thinking about cognition that better match observations of actual human behavior, and Quantum Models of Cognition and Decision presents an outstandingly clear and thorough overview of this exciting new field. Busemeyer and Bruza do an outstanding job of incorporating key concepts and ideas from quantum theory, showing how aspects of quantum phenomena and behavior can provide valuable insights into human cognitive processes. Thanks to their observation that some puzzling results in the field of psychology are similar to aspects of quantum mechanics, Busemeyer and Bruza demonstrate through utilization of mathematical models, how one of the larger contributions of a working theory of quantum cognition is the way it allows for people to experience 'indefinite' states, or superposition states. The authors argue that "the wave nature of an indefinite state captures the psychological experience of conflict, ambiguity, confusion, and uncertainty; the particle nature of a definite state captures the psychological experience of conflict resolution, decision, and certainty." One of the greatest joys of reading Quantum Models of Cognition and Decision is the way numerous detailed examples are presented that show how well quantum theory and quantum probability theory provide clarity in some of the more intriguing areas of recent research in psychology. One such example is how the quantum approach agrees quite well with the constructionist view of belief, attitude, and intention proposed by social psychologists such as Schwarz, so there is a way to better understand how our beliefs, attitudes and intentions are not simply stored in memory as fixed, never-changing properties, but instead are constructed and re-constructed when needed. Many chapters of Quantum Models of Cognition and Decision begin with engaging examples to illustrate the concepts being described, which bring the ideas into the realm of daily experience where the subject of quantum cognition springs to life. Suddenly, we find ourselves nodding in agreement that of course, reality viewed from a quantum perspective can be described in something much more complex than a boolean exhaustive description--of course, reality is much better described in various incompatible ways, using descriptions that sometimes can't be compared or combined. This complexity of the world shows up in many ways, such as where certain combinations and associations can be surprising. When people hear the combination of the words, "pet" and "human," for example, they often come up with the association "slave"--which is really quite remarkable, since the concept of slave is not commonly associated with either the word "pet" or "human." One of the most fascinating sections of Quantum Models of Cognition and Decision has to do with 'dynamic consistency,' or the resolution of complex decisions through planning for the future while considering complex sequences of potential events. The authors explain, "Optimal strategies for planning multistage decisions usually rely on backward induction processes that require planning from the last stage and working backwards to the current stage (von Winterfeldt & Edwards, 1986). This requires the current decision to be based on plans for future decisions." This kind of decision-making is clearly ideal for quantum processing, since in quantum theory and quantum cognition, the future becomes a superposed state. Quantum Models is highly recommended for anyone interested in consciousness and quantum theory, and is highly accessible for readers of all levels of expertise in these areas, from beginners to experts. There is necessarily a good deal of math, balanced by wonderfully descriptive narratives--so readers can either pore through the mathematics or skip over it, and gain a great deal from this book either way. This book is highly recommended as being one of the very best books available that provides insights and clarity as to how quantum models of cognition can model changing, ephemeral, mixed qualities of human thought.
