Have you ever noticed how much more empowering it feels when you are aiming for goals that are not too big a stretch from where you currently are, compared to having a feeling that you are biting off more than you can chew? There is something very satisfying in seeing gradual improvement, especially when gaining confidence at mastering something we can see ourselves succeeding at doing. I love to consider the question "How good can it get?" to consciously become aware of what kind of future we can believe might be a possible future for ourselves in order to set goals and move forward to a future we believe is within reach. I feel most prosperous on days when I start the day with a meditation to envision just how beautifully well this day might go. This meditation allows me to move from feeling the energy of a 'just OK' day into a more positively energized day. In this way, each day becomes an incremental step onward and upward... a tiny positive adjustment.

This incremental approach is one which sometimes leads people to feel they're making slow progress, yet slow progress can sometimes be more effective than attempts to make giant leaps, as recent research on the topic of why positive messages hurt people with low self-esteem now indicates. While some people strive to state the highest possible intentions for themselves, they seldom consider the jarring effect that can occur when a person's stated intentions are terribly different from their statement of reality. Joanne Wood from the University of Waterloo found that people with low self-esteem who repeated "I'm a lovable person" to themselves felt worse than people who did neither. These researchers found that statements that contradict what people believe about their self-image are more likely to be met with resistance than acceptance, leaving people feeling even more unlovable than ever. While this finding might seem disappointing for Law of Attraction students everywhere, I find it tremendously informative and helpful.

Keeping the concept of incremental improvements in mind, we can bring about improvement in our lives through positive affirmations by listening to our gut feelings, our hearts, and our heads... and communicating back and forth from the highest ideals to where we truly feel ourselves to be right here, right now. We can note what we truly consider to be a believable outcome for our given situation. Sometimes, we may find what we feel inspired to do from our pure gut feelings makes no immediate sense... but following our gut feelings and heart connections can provide us with wonderful rewards far surpassing anything we might even imagine for ourselves.

At a Sacramento holistic expo last month, I was delighted to notice that I was situated next to a woman I wanted to meet, Kathleen Robertson from southern California. What a marvelous synchronicity to find myself adjacent to the very woman whose photo had felt so appealing to me! Emerging from a happy state of reverent reverie, I began my morning by painting a watercolor image of two hands holding the Earth. This was the first time I had felt inspired to paint my hands, holding the planet, and I wondered why this might be. I left that thought for later as I became busy with people who came to see me seeking intuitive readings and life coaching. At the end of the day, I was delighted to talk with the woman in the booth to my left, aura portrait artist, Carol Skylark. I was stunned to see her wearing a necklace which was made of a stone framed by two colorful hands -- somewhat similar to what I had painted at the beginning of the day. Carol's name instantly seemed quite familiar to me, and as I leafed through the pages of my book, Aura Advantage, I slowed down when I reached the section of Aura Advantage where Carol Skylark is one of the two aura portrait artists I mention by name! I also showed Carol the watercolor I'd painted that morning of my hands holding the Earth, and she was stunned... telling me that she had recently painted a similar portrait back home in Colorado for one of her aura portrait clients, who had been holding a crystal orb in her hands and envisioning healing the Earth. Carol and I gazed at each other in awe as we recognized a connection far more amazing than either of us imagined experiencing with someone we just met.
    Meditation: Knowing now that you can make incremental improvements in your life, allow your mind to wander and contemplate something wonderfully enjoyable you can imagine in your life that does not seem all that far from reach. Close your eyes and picture yourself feeling a bit happier, healthier, and more prosperous with this incremental improvement. Relax and enjoy this daydream, knowing it very well may soon come true!

A new study suggests that positive affirmations can sometimes backfire badly. Ironically, it seems to be people with low self-esteem, who are most likely to rely on such statements, who are most likely to feel worse because of them. Joanne Wood from the University of Waterloo found that people with low self-esteem who repeated "I'm a lovable person" to themselves felt worse than people who did neither.

Many scientists argue that daydreaming is a crucial tool for creativity, a thought process that allows the brain to make new associations and connections. Instead of focusing on our immediate surroundings - such as the message of a church sermon - the daydreaming mind is free to engage in abstract thought and imaginative ramblings. As a result, we're able to imagine things that don't actually exist, like sticky yellow bookmarks. "If your mind didn't wander, then you'd be largely shackled to whatever you are doing right now," says Jonathan Schooler, a psychologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara. "But instead you can engage in mental time travel and other kinds of simulation. During a daydream, your thoughts are really unbounded."

Ok, this is really strange. I just connected with you via twitter, looked at your website, started to read stories on shifting realities, people there one minute, gone next. THIS just started happening to me last week. Now, granted, I've been laid off since February and my whole reality has shifted into a more metaphysical, spiritual, meditative state so I'm opening up to new experiences, etc. Dreams are becoming very vivid - energy dreams, etc... But, images appearing and disappearing I have never heard of, so I chalked it up to my imagination, maybe the person(s) went into a home nearby, etc.

The first appearance/disappearance was when I went to pickup my daughter from her apartment. I clearly saw a man who seemed to be drunk or he could have been disabled but clearly having a problem standing up and/or walking. He was holding onto a fence when I drove by. Two minutes later (I picked up my daughter, told her about him, even said I'll show you him) and when I turned the corner he was gone. Now, clearly, he had a problem walking so I'm positive he didn't disappear into a house or fall down because I looked for him and it was only minutes since I picked up my daughter, turned around and came back the same way... I thought it was really strange, and said to my daughter, "Hmm, I wonder where he went."

The second appearance/disappearance happened a couple of days later. I was walking which I normally do in the morning, and noticed a woman a few feet in front of me, walking toward me. I don't know if a car came by, but something distracted me and when I looked up again, she was gone. Again, I looked down the adjacent street, thinking maybe she went into a nearby house, but I would have seen her going into the house. She was just... Gone!

Again, I brushed it off... Then I was reading the stories and thought, OMG, that's what I have been experiencing... Very, very interesting!

Note from Cynthia: Thanks so much for sending me these fabulous reality shift stories! I know how disorienting it can feel when you're looking at someone one minute and they're gone the next, as this has also happened to me. I find these experiences happen to me more frequently when I'm open to them and in a more metaphysical, energized state of consciousness, just as you mention you've been recently. I also take these reality shifts to be a very good sign that you are getting evidence of personally witnessing new realities, much like tuning the dial on a radio to flip through various stations before settling on one you like best.

I had an experience on Friday that convinced me of life after death, then today, got your newsletter with an invitation to share stories so, here goes... First, the background.

My father passed from colon cancer in 2001 He was, like me, an artist. After his passing, I took images of his paintings and creating some products for cafepress. These were commemorative for the family. I never updated them and never sold any outside the ones that I bought.

Yesterday, my grandmother passed away (my father's mother in law). She'd been in a nursing home for several years but, still, she seemed quite hale & hearty. She'd had a freak minor accident the day before and was admitted to the hospital. She passed away after surgery.

At the exact second she passed, one of my father's commemorative mugs sold out of the blue and I got an auto-email about the sale: http://www.cafepress.com/iversonwsm.4835964 As I emailed my mother about it and pressed Send, the phone rang and it was her to tell me that my grandmother had passed. It was also their wedding anniversary.

Note from Cynthia: What an amazing experience this is, and how marvelous that you got such a clear indication of connection with your father and grandmother through this experience! I find it especially interesting that none of your father's commemorative mugs had previously sold to anyone but you, and the moment one sold to someone else it was the moment your grandmother passed away... on their wedding anniversary! This is definitely the kind of experience one doesn't soon forget. I send you my deepest condolences on the passing of your grandmother... and thank you so very much for sharing this inspirational story.

(5) Reality Shifting Q and A / Mail Bag
Hello Mam,

I was reading your article about how to find lost things. Recently I traveled with my husband and stayed in a hotel. Before going from the house, I put the jewelry of two chains and a pair of earrings and bangles into a plastic ziplock. When I was about to pack, I saw there were three bangles. I felt panicked, and searched the drawer and put back other one, so now there were four bangles. We traveled and stayed in our hotel. I instructed the hotel maid not to go into my room for cleaning. I kept the jewelry and my makeup box in the drawer next to my bed, and put a plastic bag on top of it and went out.

When I came back, I found that the "please do not disturb" tag was inside the room, and when I went near the drawer I saw a part of plastic. I checked the jewelry and saw that one bangle was missing, so I searched the whole room. I found that trash was missing and was sure that someone had been in the room.

I contacted the hotel manager and told her what happened, and waited for my husband and told him when he returned.and made a complaint. We found out that other two customers had too some problem one of them had lost their gps and ipod and other persons room was ransacked but nothing taken.i prayed to god alot and police complaint was made. I did pray everyday... and when I came back, I found my bangle in the drawer.

Can you please help was the bangle stolen. Im sure I put all the bangles into the pouch and went from house. I hope you will give a clue if it was stolen, and the appearance of the bangle.

Dear Chery,
Thank you so very much for writing to me! I have found things that have 'gone missing' for weeks... so they have appeared in my house when they were lost elsewhere, even three weeks or more earlier.

My key to success for having lost items reappear is to maintain a very positive emotional attitude about the missing item the whole time it's gone... with a sense of excited expectancy that soon I'll have it in hand once again. I also keep an open mind to intuit where it might show up... and often the missing item shows up somewhere very different from where it vanished. When a jewelry box once fell out of my purse while I was running errands, I was heartbroken... but after a while I felt it might reappear in my underwear drawer (no particular reason why it should show up there). Indeed, after a few weeks being gone, that is precisely where the missing jewelry box and all its jewelry appeared!

Any time you find yourself worrying, clear those worries and fears away and replace them with gratitude that your missing item will soon be with you. Feel excited about this... and joyful, if possible. This kind of emotional practice requires lots of meditation practice, but please know that missing items have returned years later in some cases, so every day is another good chance to meditate!I hope this helps!
