"The human being is part of the whole,
called by us the 'universe',
a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts
and feelings, as something separate from the rest — a kind of
optical
delusion of consciousness.
This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal
desires.
Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle
of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature
in its beauty."
- Albert Einstein
The biggest difference between my most enjoyable and least enjoyable
memories has to do with whether or not I was feeling connected to others
and the world around me at the time. When I feel a sense of belonging, I
feel relaxed instead of stressed. When I feel empathy with others, I feel
love instead of fear.
While much of our feelings of being connected are subconscious, recent
studies demonstrate surprising physically observable ways these connections
manifest. Scientists reported this month that fire-walkers' heart rates are
synchronized to friends and family observing; it seems evident that we
gain physical and emotional support when in the company of those who feel
connected to us.
In her marvelous book, The
Bond, journalist Lynne McTaggart describes a number of ways humans are
collaborative beings, whose needs to give, share, belong and network are at
least as powerful as the drive to compete. I'm in agreement with McTaggart
that finding ways to connect, interact and relate to the highest sense of
good in others will be the key to mankind's future success. I love the big
idea in The Bond that attaining a state of shared respect for more than one
view of reality allows us to feel bonds of connection of tremendous
depth... bridging differences of politics, religion, gender, species, and
all aspects of personal identity.
Coming from a contrasting yet supportive perspective, Simon Baron-Cohen
asks us to consider the true root of terrorism, gang violence, and crime.
Baron-Cohen proposes these social ills have one common cause, and while we
might initially view them as evil, he asks us to ditch the word "evil" in
favor of "empathy erosion" -- a pernicious state of mind in which we lack
any feelings for others and treat them as objects of our will. You can take
his Cambridge University EQSQ Empathy Test to gain insights into whether
your mind tends to empathize or systemize.

Many of our ancient civilizations, like the Mayans, were able to make
extremely accurate determinations of cosmic cycles without the benefit of
today's machines. Long before the Hubble telescope, the Mayans created a
calendar, or set of calendars, based on movements of the cosmos. How did
they do it? How did the Dogon people of Africa know everything about the
Sirius star before a telescope had been invented? Indigenous peoples have
long held practices that allow seeing with an inner vision. Can everyone
access this ability, or must we rely on technology as a mediator? Join this

Fire-walking is a feat few of us want our bare feet to attempt. But should
your tootsies traipse over a bed of red-hot coals, scientists have
discovered an unusual phenomenon that occurs during it.
A fire-walker's heart rate appears to match the rhythm of his relatives and
close friends on hand to watch the offbeat event, a new study finds. http://on.msnbc.com/jEw0up

My Friend's Brother is Alive Again
Amy
Redwing, Minnesota, USA
I'm absolutely baffled. I started reading the Reality Shift stories, and
told myself to be on the lookout for such things in my own life. I didn't
have long to wait. The mother of this girl I'd gone to school with died
about two weeks ago; listed as surviving was this girl's brother. The thing
is, I KNOW I read HIS obituary about ten years ago. I know I did, because
he was developmentally disabled and had a heart condition. Of course, when
I looked in the newspaper archives, his obituary was gone.
Note from Cynthia: Thanks so much for sharing your experience
hearing that
the previously-reported-dead brother of the girl you went
to school is alive again. This is an excellent case of a
highly memorable person having been reported dead, since
I take it you recall reading details about him and the challenges
in his life in his obituary. The times I've witnessed such
an "alive again" reality shift, newspaper archives no
longer showed the obituary. Sometimes, those I see alive
again I remember thinking and feeling, "I wish they hadn't
died!"... and I suspect such wishes often shift reality.

I had an interesting reality shift the other day - it was very early in the
morning. All of a sudden, I woke up from my sleep, because I could hear the
entire
building shaking, as if we were having a huge earthquake. The noise was so
loud,
and my entire body was shaking.
I ran outside, because I thought the building was
going to fall down on me. My heart was beating so fast I thought I was
going to
have a heart attack. I got out onto my patio to see that none of my bird
feeders
or garden ornaments were shaking. I could still hear the noise, and my body
could
still feel the earthquake, and I couldnt' get my heart to calm down!
I thought, "This is crazy, maybe a spirit from Japan is trying to let me
empathize with
their last moments in the earthquake, what else could it be?"
I wasn't dreaming - I was wide awake the whole time! it was like i
was in two realities at once - the earthquake one and the California that
wasn't having an earthquake!
Then, two days later, I sat down to read Carlos Casteneda's "The
Teachings of
Don Juan" and I was so wrapped up in it I finished it in one day --
but the interesting
part was when he said Mescalito, the spirit of the Peyote
plant, made him feel like
there was a huge earthquake taking place, the entire ground was
rumbling -- this
was one way the spirit communicated with him. So then I was
wondering if maybe
I had some sort of contact with Mescalito, because he knew I was
about to read about
him - who knows! I'm getting better at enjoying the mystery though
:)
Note from Cynthia: Thanks so much for sharing this reality shift
story!
Dreams sometimes afford us the possibility of accessing ideas and
information
directly, without the usual filters we have operating during ordinary
consciousness,
and free of the usual restrictions of being just in this one time and this
one space. Daydreams can be every bit as powerful as dreams... that is,
when we can be in two realities at the same time.
I love the way you were able to find a possible explanation for the
mysterious
shaking experience you felt in the book you were reading, noting how
sometimes
we can recognize a given spirit by their unique fingerprint of
energy.
Traffic Accident Vanishes
Leslee
Raleigh, North Carolina, USA
My reality shift was just before Obama came in office.
I was leaving work one day, when I looked down the street and saw there had
been an bad accident a block down. I needed to turn the other way, so I was
looking both ways. The accident had been a bad one, and the police were not
there yet! I remember looking down at two cars in the center lane crunched
together. It is a four lane with a turning center lane and they must have
both gotten in the center to turn at the same time. So they were facing
each other. I am an Artist and draftsman for a civil engineering firm. And
I am dyslexic, so I look at all most everything as a picture, including
words.
I looked back to where I had just seen the accident, and it was gone.
I had just looked one way, and then the other all of a second -- no way
could they have moved that fast! My next thought was that this was a
reality shift, and that Obama would be in office. And that thought was a
surprise as well, but I felt good the rest of the day... and forgot all
about it. I remember asking for a sign that things would be getting better.
I guess that was my sign. I don't know why I felt that Obama would be
president I just did. I remember thinking maybe in the other dimension were
the cars were, maybe he would not be. I have no idea if that is how it
works, that was just a thought. :)
I do think we may shift so smoothly most of the time we don't notice. I
think reality shifts happen a lot, but people just think they had to be
mistaken.
Note from Cynthia: What an amazing experience, to witness the
scene of a bad accident on the street one moment, and the next to see no
trace of it! How beautiful to look at most everything as a picture,
including words! And what an amazing sign to receive in response to your
request for one... two crunched-together cars in the middle of an
intersection suddenly cleared away. I do believe a lot more people see such
reality shifts on a regular basis than actually report them; these kinds of
experiences don't fall into clear-cut mental categories for most people who
haven't heard much about reality shifts. I find your state of mind
interesting after this reality shift, that you were left with a good
feeling the rest of the day, and also a certainty that Obama would be in
office.

(5) Reality Shifting Q and A / Mail
Bag
Good Morning Cynthia! I am looking for your opinion/guidance regarding something that
happened to me yesterday. I would like to read more about this to
gain better
understanding, but I am at a loss as to what really is happening/happened
to
me so I wonder if you could put a "label" on it for me or at least point me
in a direction? Maybe you have had a similar experience that you
can tell
me about.Yesterday I had my second reflexology session. I became
interested in reflexology and wanted to see what it was all about.
I have no physical
ailments but I had read about reflexology being "sole to soul" and helping
to unblock memories. This was intriguing. When I got home
from my second
treatment I was "out of sorts." I could not hold a thought in my
head. It
felt like someone had turned me upside down and emptied out all of my
emotions, feelings, opinions, and thoughts about everything. I was
also
weak like I had no energy. I felt like a rag doll. I had
purchased a shrub
earlier in the day and wanted to get it in the ground in case it rained
that
night. The simple act of planting the shrub took everything I had.
I hoped
the feeling would go away because I was so unsure of what to do about it
(and it was totally unlike me) but it lasted the entire day. I was
not
tired but only wanted to sit and stare... like my mind and body were not
connected. Does this sound at all familiar to you? I searched on
Amazon through the reflexology books hoping something would
spark my interest and I might be able to understand what I had just
experienced but nothing jumps out at me. So I began to wonder what
one
might call this experience, maybe I need to find a book on that. Do
you
have any ideas? I appreciate whatever you can offer Cynthia. This
is a real puzzle to me
and if it happens to me again I would like to understand what my soul is
trying to tell me. Thanks so much. Love,
Joni
Dearest Joni,
Thanks for writing to me about your experience following your
second reflexology treatment. I have encountered something quite
similar to what you describe during a period of time when I was
undergoing a kundalini awakening. Your description of feeling
you "could not hold a thought in your head," and "emptied out of
all of my emotions, feelings, opinions and thoughts about
everything" is an excellent match for what I underwent during
a two week period of kundalini awakening in my life, in which
I had a first-hand direct experience of the surrender of ego.
When we view such experiences as surrender of ego, we gain
opportunities to directly connect with Divine Source... with
Oneness... with Spirit... with God. Our egos seldom let go of
control of our lives easily, so the process of surrendering ego
can feel traumatic, destabilizing, and unnerving... even to the
point that one who is undergoing ego surrender may feel empty.
In my personal experience with ego surrender during my
kundalini awakening, I realized the nature of my ego identity
as being something akin to a monkey mind in that it was fear-
based, finite, and limited. In contrast, I also experienced my
spirit identity as being love-based, infinite, and unlimited.
This spiritual awakening showed me that we are not our bodies
and not our stories, but instead something far greater that
unites and connects us all. Considering what you're experiencing, I highly
recommend the book, The Untethered Soul. What I love so much
about this book is how it shows that by identifying ourselves as observers
watching thoughts and feelings flowing through, we can keep our hearts open
to love. This concept of separating the part of us who
thinks-and-feels-and-acts from the part of ourself who sees ourselves
thinking and feeling and acting is extraordinarily liberating.
Best wishes on your path! Wishing you every blessing of love,
Cynthia

EQSQ: Empathizing-Systemizing Theory & Tests
http://eqsq.com EQSQ.com centers on the Empathizing-Systemizing theory of
the male versus the female brain types and how this knowledge can be
applied to life choices to make more informed decisions. Systemizers and
empathizers can find information and resources related to education,
educational programs and career choices. EQSQ psychological tests developed
by Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, Sally Wheelwright and their team at the
University of Cambridge, England, can provide insights into the way your
brain functions. Specifically, you can discover if you are more prone to
empathize or systemize. Understanding how your mind works best naturally
could enable you to make better study and career choices throughout
life.

Tired of living in a dog-eat-dog world? Ready to envision a
way to do your personal best while supported by everyone around you?
Author Lynne McTaggart encourages us to consider a wealth of recent
scientific studies pointing us down a refreshingly different path... toward
cooperation. The Bond invites us to find ways to interact with and relate
to the highest sense of good in others as the key to mankind's future
success.
The Bond is organized in three main sections, with part one covering the
concept of the Superorganism, part two describing the Pull to Wholeness
(how we're born to belong, agree, give, and take turns), and part three
about Recovering the Bond.
I particularly love reading how recent studies in game theory demonstrate
the winningest game strategies involve cooperating and taking turns, rather
than adhering to a pure individually competitive model. It's not too great
a leap from seeing the benefits of sharing, taking turns, and reciprocity
in games to taking similar actions in real life... and I love reading about
how humans have been hard-wired biologically to feel best when doing
exactly that.
I'm inspired to learn that one simple thing we can do to improve our
physical health is to become a member of a close-knit group or community;
and a simple way to reduce depression and loneliness is to actively help
others.
One of the most powerful ideas in The Bond has to do with ways we learn to
pay attention, and how learning to pay attention to more than we have
previously noticed can make a profound difference. McTaggart explains,
"When you notice the whole, you allow for and respect more than one version
of reality." While opposing ideologies sometimes find little to agree upon,
the very idea that there exists a greater wholeness brings healing.
The Bond is packed with inspirational ideas and practical tips for anyone
interested in finding out how to live their best possible life feeling
supported by bonds of connection, rather than struggling in competitive
isolation. Highly recommended!
What a joy it is to read a cutting-edge physics book written
for the lay person! Fred Alan Wolf's book, "Time Warps and Space Twists"
sets for itself the challenging goal of describing some of the newest
physics explanations for how God created the universe in terms just about
anyone can understand. Rather than over-simplifying concepts from physics,
Wolf presents each theory and theorem in layman's terms which are clear
enough for most anyone to follow. I especially love the way Wolf does such
a marvelous job describing how our view of the world has changed so much in
just the last few years with regard to things like the Higgs field,
tachyons, and tardyons. Thanks to some of the newest findings in quantum
physics, we can now "say bye-bye to causality in quantum field theory,"
providing us with fascinating insights about retrocausality and
backward-through-time travel. Highly recommended for anyone interested in
spirituality and science!
When we hear the term "green" or "environmentally
conscious", chances are we don't hear words like "fun" or "exciting," yet
these are exactly the words that come to mind when reading environmental
innovator Carolyn North's new book, "Serious Fun."
This book is perfect for anyone seriously interested in finding creative
ways to live more lightly on the Earth, or making steps toward getting "off
the grid." With chapters devoted to essential daily needs to dispose of
waste and collect water, Serious Fun provides practical ideas for getting
serious about healing our relationship with the Earth.
I particularly love sections on creative ideas for artistic and practical
reuse, with ideas for turning junk into art... and as always, my very
favorite thing about a book written by Carolyn North is the way she shares
down-to-earth personal stories of great spiritual depth and soulful
insight. I love her description of waking one morning to find backyard
fences collapsed, and coming to a joint deciison with neighbors to create
an open and much more enjoyable shared garden space, rather than replacing
the barriers.
Serious Fun is a glorious invitation to each of us to feel more deeply
satisfied and fulfilled as we make small, yet profoundly meaningful changes
in our daily lives. Highly recommended!
