One of the most amazing things about studying the field of consciousness is that things occur that seem astonishingly unlikely, such as prayer researcher Elisabeth Targ dying of the rare type of brain tumor she was studying. I was thrilled to see that the topic I had chosen a year ago, Retrocausal Reality Shifting: Adventures in the Fine Art of Changing the Past to research and present at a shamanism and alternative healing conference received international scientific attention this year when physicist Stephen Hawking published his paper on 'Top Down Cosmology.' Physicists Stephen Hawking and Thomas Hertog's concept of a 'top down cosmology' views the universe as having begun in every possible way... with the most probable pasts being determined right now. In contrast with the assumption that time must always flow in one direction from past to future, this new cosmological model depends on the retrocausality idea that effects can precede causes on all levels of reality, not just in the quantum realm.

The double standard fallacy of thinking about and treating the past and future differently is a projection of our own temporal asymmetry. One-directional causality leads us to feel hope for the future, but not for the past. Rather than viewing time from a narrowly constrained point of view, theoretical physicists are now adopting the Archimedean 'view from nowhen' to better comprehend how two-directional causality easily resolves long-standing paradoxical problems in quantum mechanics. We find a large body of evidence for retrocausality, from recent research results as well as from thousands of years of anecdotal evidence describing incidents in which cause has followed effect. Through experimental studies we see that people can perceive future events before they occur, as well as influence events that have already occurred in the past. Historical accounts describe how people often experience time-reversed phenomena, such as: precognitive dreams, miraculous spontaneous healings, manifestations, synchronicities, meeting their future selves, and recalling memories of past lives from future times.

The implication of retrocausality on a cosmic scale is that each of us is continually engaged in the creation of this present moment by negotiating paths forward to our possible futures and back toward our possible pasts. Considerations of the past and the future present us with a dazzling array of alternate universes, as some of the world's most renowned physicists, such as Stephen Hawking, seek out firm physical evidence to confirm the reality of those other possibilities. With new models for understanding how the future can affect the past, it becomes clear that the various alternate histories of the universe that have already occurred depend on the exact questions we ask right now.

On a more personal level, retrocausality encourages us to redefine our sphere of influence. We may begin to hold as much hope for a positive history as we do for a positive future, knowing we are capable of influencing both.

At a recent symposium of physicists assembled to discuss retrocausality, physicist Daniel Sheehan of the University of San Diego commented, "To say that it's impossible for the future to influence the past is to deny half of the predictions of the laws of physics." Indeed, as physicists consider the possibility of time being as symmetrical as space, we are reaching a point at which it becomes increasingly evident that we have a great deal more ability to influence historical events than most of us have ever imagined possible. It will be up to us to learn how best to ask the questions that provide us with the healthiest future and the healthiest past.

Now, using PET scanners and MRIs to peer into the heads of patients who respond to sugar pills, researchers have discovered that the placebo effect is not "all in patients' heads" but rather, in their brains. New research shows that belief in a dummy treatment leads to changes in brain chemistry. "There have always been people who have said that we could make ourselves better by positive thinking,? says Dr. Michael Selzer, professor of neurology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. ?After pooh-poohing this for years, here are studies that show that our thoughts may actually interact with the brain in a physical way."

I had a customer phone my help line, and tell me that he was having a heated debate with his spouse about this 'strange new payment' he was making for an internet account she had 'never heard of'. I was able to verify for him that yes, it was *HER* Visa card used for payment last year, but I also took the time and trouble to explain to him about Reality Shifting and how her memories could be *changed*, and that this could even include her originally checking her Visa statements and 'not finding' the payment from last year. When I mentioned such items as car keys disappearing and then reappearing, he completed the analogy for me, saying "And they reappear in the same place ten minutes later."

This is, strictly speaking, a complete stranger to me. Someone who is just a number in my database, but by the time I finished that phone call, he was thanking me for reassuring him that he was not going insane with this stuff.

I cherish every one of you that spends their days mainfesting postively with LIGHT to reach out to the 'normal' people around you. Watch for 'signs' of shifting influencing their lives, either trivially or in important ways. Help them understand what is happening. Teach them to trust from a deeper place when the superifical basis of trust seems lost.

Remote Control Appears

I was having a problem with the mute function of my TV. When I called the cable company, they thought it was something with the remote control button and asked me if I had the original remote control that came with the TV, not just the one the cable company gives. I knew I hadn't since right after I got this TV, I had a service call from the cable company and the cable guy had given me a fancy remote control and took the one I had gotten from the TV. I remember this because I sort of made this whimpering noise when he took it, unsure that he should take it.

So back to my problem... I told the customer service rep that I didn't have the original. The next day, I went out for about two hours and came back into my bedroom where my tv is, and there, sitting on my dresser, right next to the cable remote was the original remote. Two remotes, side by side. I had not looked for it because I thought it was long gone.

For a minute I was puzzled and then just chuckled, looked skyward and said thanks!

Money Changes with Changing Situation

Last Sunday, I was having a bunch of plants and flowers delivered for my garden. I live in New York City and the florist was around the block. What I bought would take one trip by two men. I decided I would tip them $10 -- five dollars for each which I thought was appropriate. To get ready, I put a $10 bill on the hallway table with nothing else on it but my purse. When the doorbell rang, it wasn't two men, but the owner of the shop's college-age daughter who told me (in a friendly way) that she would have to make two trips. As she returned for the shop the first time, I started thinking well, since it's the owner's daughter, maybe I should tip her more -- maybe I should give her $20.

I went to the table to exchange the $10 bill for a $20 bill and there was no money there. I didn't really give it much of a thought except thinking in passing -- Oh I guess I didn't take the ten dollar bill out of my wallet after all. (Although, of course, I knew I had!) I got distracted with something and then started thinking that ten dollars really was enough money to tip her and when I went to the table to get the ten dollar bill out of my purse, there was the orignial ten dollar bill laying there.

I know if this hadn't happened, I would have tipped $20 since it would have been out and ready -- so this is how the universe saved me ten bucks!

Q: Dear Cynthia:
I found your article on retrocausality interesting. I never heard the term until recently. Several years ago while reading about remote viewing I came across the concept that the future affects the past. At first, I had a bit of difficulty wrapping my brain around that concept because I like most people have been taught cause and effect. Now I understand the concept completely. I have had several percognitive experiences while awake and when dreaming that surprised me and others. However, I don't think I have ever experienced retrocausality. How does one differentiate precognition from retrocausality? I would like to learn more about the subject and how one can apply it to their daily lives. Can you recommend some books that don't involve too much quantum physics?

A: Dear Dina,
Thank you so much for your wonderful question! The way I experience precognition is by having a crystal clear "memory" of a future event that is so clear that I can hardly know that it's a memory from the future... a "future memory," if you will. I recommend the book, Future Memory by PMH Atwater for covering this topic. I sometimes get dreams that show future scenarios, and I sometimes can daydream and sense the strong energy of a probable future... and all of these feelings are precognitive. Retrocausal experiences for me are similar in some ways to precognition, in the sense that I get a feeling of connection to something... yet in the case of retrocausality, there's a feeling that something has just changed... that an old, familiar book I've read many times now has a different picture, as I mention in my ebook, Reality Shifts, or contains entirely different writing.
